Eternity

In this document we want to define the time of eternity as related to the Bible.  As with the previous studies, we will try to stick to the facts and not deviate from what the Holy Scriptures have to say. This document will not address anything outside of scripture or try to match the current events to a key point in the Bible. This is the last study in this series.

Revelation 21:2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

Here John sees the new city of Jerusalem coming down from Heaven. This makes John an eye witness to this event. This new city will be placed on a new earth in a new heaven.  This city will not be destroyed for ever and ever as stated in Isaiah 66:22 For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain.

Revelation21:3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God

In this new city God Himself will live (Dwell) with His saints for ever. He will personally be in their presence and will be their God.

Revelation 21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

In eternity, there will no longer be any pain or suffering.  Those who will inhabit the city of new Jerusalem have held fast (Revelations 3:11) the word of God. And have stood (Ephesians 6:11) against the working of Satan which is also called Lucifer. Also stated in  Revelation 21:7 the saints have overcome the things of this world.

The trials of the saints are over.

Revelation 3:11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

Revelation 21:7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.

Revelation 21:5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful

There will come a time when this old sin cursed world will be replaced with a new sinless one.  Here we are told that God will create this new environment which will not be affected by sin and evil.

Revelation 21:6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. We are told that in the new Jerusalem there is a river of flowing water coming out of the throne of God for all of eternity. Revelation 22:1 And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.

Revelation 21:7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. Here again God is reassuring us that Heaven will be a place worth waiting for.  All of the trials and temptations that we face here on earth will be pale in comparison. When we stand in the presence of God for all of eternity it will be worth it all.

Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. Here the scriptures turn to the unsaved. We are told that those who do not overcome will meet a fate that is a complete opposite of what has been just stated above.

We find that a lake of fire awaits those who have chosen to defy the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. They will have no excuse; they have chosen their own fate.

Revelation 21:9 And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife. Those who will spend eternity with God are called the bride of Christ. As in old Jewish customs, the bridegroom paid a dowry of a price for the bride to be.  Jesus paid our dowry when He paid our sin debt on the cross.

The apostle Paul tells us this in 1Corinthians 7:23 Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men. And 1Corinthians 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

Revelation 21:10 And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, As mentioned before John was an eye witness to this future event taking place.

John witnessed the death and resurrection of Jesus by physically speaking with Him after he arose.  John would not have endured the things that he did if it were simply a lie and a made up story.

Revelations 1:9 I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.

Revelation 21:11 Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal; Here we have a peek of what the holy city of Jerusalem will look like.  Those who are spending eternity with Jesus will live within these city walls

I don't think that we can understand the beauty of new Jerusalem and its size.  This will be the perfect city; there are no utility bills, mortgages, rents to pay or parking issues.

The size of the city is fifteen hundred square miles.  The city is perfectly laid out by the master builder which is God. There are no crooked walls or cracked foundations. There are no second thoughts or added support beams.  There is nothing that is out of place.

The city was pure gold. The symbols indicate that the city is beautiful and rich beyond conception. The costliest materials known to mortals are named in order to give us some idea.

The love of Christ is mentioned using the same words as to describe the size of the new city Jerusalem as stated in:

Ephesians 3:17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, (18) May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;
Revelation 21:12 And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:
Revelation 21:13 On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates.
Revelation 21:14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
Revelation 21:15 And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof.
Revelation 21:16 And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.
Revelation 21:17 And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel.
Revelation 21:18 And the building of the wall of it was of jasper: and the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass.
Revelation 21:19 And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald;
Revelation 21:20 The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst.
Revelation 21:21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.
Revelation 21:22 And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it We are told in scripture that even here on earth that God does not dwell in temples made with hands. Act 17:24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

Some churches spend much time and effort on huge and expensive buildings.  This is to appeal to the flesh and not to God.  It is a good feeling to go to an elaborate build to worship God.

However, we are also told that the human body of the saints, (those who are born again) is the temple of God currently on this earth as stated in
1Corinthians 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? And 1Corinthians 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

Even though the true believers house the Holy Spirit which is God in us, we are not gods ourselves.  To believe that we are gods goes back to the garden of Eden where Satan told Eve that if she disobeyed the God of Heaven and earth that she could become like God.

Genesis 3:1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? (2) And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: (3) But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. (4) And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: (5) For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

Revelation 21:23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. The glory of God will be the light of the new city.  Take notice that in the creation of the earth, there was light on the first day, but the sun and moon were created on the 4th day.

Genesis 1:3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. (4) And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. (5) And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

Genesis 1:16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. (17) And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, (18) And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. (19) And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

God starts the creation with Him being the light. Also, in the new heaven and earth God will be the light as well.

Revelation 21:24 And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it. The key here is which are saved.  The Bible here is speaking on eternity for those who will live in Heaven for all of eternity.  The damned are addressed later.

These are true born again Christians. Again stating Revelation 21:7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.

Revelation 21:25 And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.

Revelation 22:5 And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.
Usually right before dark a city would close its gates as a protective measure against an attack from a foe that would be under cover of night.

Here, there will never be night and darkness will never set in. For God Himself will be the light of the city.

Darkness is also referred to evil as well.  We find that here on this earth men that are evil lurk in the darkness.

John 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

Matthew 6:23
But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!

Luke 11:34 The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.

There will be no evil in Heaven, therefore darkness does not and cannot exist.

Only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life will inhabit the city of New Jerusalem.  Again God is telling us that we need to believe in Him only to inherit this place called Heaven and eternity.

Revelation 21:26 And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it.
Revelation 21:27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.
A glimpse of what Heaven's throne looks like
Revelation 22:1 And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. Here John sees a river of water coming out from the throne of God.  This river is mentioned in other places in scripture and represents the Holy Spirit.  It is mentioned that this river feeds the tree of life.

The tree of life is our salvation in Christ.  Jesus spoke of this water when conversing with the woman at the well as stated here.  John 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

Also reading in the book of John, we find that Jesus also refers to Himself as the bread of life.  Those who are true believers will have free access to the river of life flowing out from the throne of God forever.  Therefore one will nver thirst in the presence of God. John 6:35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

Here again Jesus is speaking of this same water. Anyone who seeks God will be partakers of the fountain of life. Revelation 21:6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

Jesus is calling us to come to Him.  He is the bread of life, our salvation, our hope and comfort. Revelation 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

John 7:37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. (38) He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

One of the key phrases here is as the scripture hath said.  Everyone needs to read the scriptures for themselves. Each person is accountable for their own life and living. When we stand before the judgment seat of God, we will not be able to use the excuse, "that is what the pastor told me".

Everyone will be held accountable for their own actions of the body.
2Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

Those who fight the good fight of faith are blessed of the Lord and are feed with this river of water or the Holy Spirit.  Others should be able to see this in our knowledge of scripture and by how we live our life.

Psalms 1:1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.  (2) But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. (3) And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
Revelation 22:2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
Revelation 22:3 And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him: Here we find that the curse of sin will no longer have any affect on those who are in Heaven and in the presence of God.  This curse was placed on man when Adam and Eve sinned in the garden as told to us in Genesis.

Genesis 3:16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. (17) And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; (18) Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; (19) In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

Here we find that through mans' sin and rebellion, God placed a curse on man, woman, and the ground.

We further read that the curse extended to the whole of creation as well as stated in Romans 8:22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.
Revelation 22:4 And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads. To be with Jesus can not be compared to anything else. To be in the presence of the Almighty God will be the resting place of the saints for all eternity.

As stated before.

Often times when we would purchase something of value we would write our name on it to show that we were the owner of that item. It was purchased by us and is our personal property.  The saints of God will have the name of God in their foreheads as a sign of ownership of the King of kings and the Lord of lords.
Revelation 22:6 And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done. Here we find that John did not get the Revelation directly from Jesus but was handed down from God the Son to an angel then to John.

Revelation 1:1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:

Also, keep in mind that this is the Revelation of Jesus Christ and not John.  John only wrote what he saw.

We are told here that the Word of God is faithful and true. There are no errors in the Word of God.

We read in 2Peter 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

2Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Does God really exist?

Dan 7:14 And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed. This is taken from the Old Testament in the book of Daniel.  Daniel is foretelling the future kingdom of God. As stated here in scripture this kingdom will be an everlasting or eternal kingdom.

This present earth will pass away as stated in Matthew 24:35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. This is not speaking of the eternal kingdom but this present earth and heavens.  However, the Word of God will never change or be done away with.
1Th 4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. This is referred to as the rapture of the church.  This is the blessed hope that is mentioned in Titus 2:13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
